Figurative Language
An idiom is a phrase in which the meaning of each word separately does not tell the reader what the idiom means. In other words, the words in the phrase mean something more than each word in it.
A proverb is a short pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.

An adage, which may also called a proverb, is an old, short saying that is generally accepted to have some truth to it.
