Every different culture, community, language and generation has its own collection of special sayings. They may be intended to present a lesson or advice or a meaning that is only evident to that particular group of people. The images presented by the language may only have "figurative in meaning."  Some really only convey a picture that is meaningful in particular situations. Idioms might be very difficult to understand for those learning a second language or those who are new to a specific group of people.
