Welcome to our Fifth Grade Family!
I’m Dr. Kim Lester, a member of Bryan County Elementary School’s Fifth Grade Team. I get to explore reading, English Language Arts, social studies, and writing with your child this year. I love being a member of the Bryan County Family. The fifth grade team is ready to make this a special year for our students. Together, we will create wonderful memories of an engaging and creative fifth grade year.
I’ve been lucky enough to spend more than 20 years with students in classrooms in Florida and Georgia. Last year was my first year with the fifth grade team at BCES. In 2019, I taught self-contained fifth grade at Rice Creek School in Savannah-Chatham County. Prior to that, I spent 18 years teaching first through fifth grade students in several schools and gifted education at St. Elmo Center for the Gifted in Muscogee County, in Columbus, Georgia. My first few years were spent in Waldo, Florida.
During my career I have had the honor of being named Muscogee County’s 2013 Teacher of the Year and a 2016 Top Ten Finalist in the Georgia State Teacher of the Year program. I am also a Harvard Fellow, an opportunity presented by the Muscogee Educational Excellence Foundation. I have also taught the occasional graduate and undergraduate course at Columbus State University’s College of Education and Health Professions.
My husband and I are celebrating 26 years together. We love camping, geocaching, and traveling with our two daughters. Julia is a senior studying music education at Berry College. Danielle is a lacrosse player and a senior at Richmond Hill High School. We have two furry girls, Sugar and Bailey. We share Picasso the bearded dragon with my fifth graders.
Please know my door is always open to you and your child. Throughout my career, I’ve called students “my kids.” I sincerely believe in creating relationships that foster security, empathy, creativity and a true sense of self-worth for my kids. We are a team and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
With much love,
Dr. Kim Lester
