Chapter 4

1. The narrator wonders  briefly if Jamie had been faking unconsciousness.  Explain why he might think this about his best friend.

2. "Something in my conscience kicked me."  Explain this. Think deeply.

3. Explain why the narrator calls Jamie - Jamie the great."  Think about all the stunts he played with his best friend. List them.

4.  The phrase "all roses and cream" means what exactly.  Explain the image it creates.

5. Define "freak accident."

6. When the narrator looks out the window and says the sky didn't act like it knew Jamie was dead, he also says "horses and lambs and floppy-eared dogs chased across the sky."  Explain what he means by this. (42)

7.Explain what the boys were doing "when they felt like engineers." (43)

8. Explain what their final solution was to finding a way to message each other from their windows.

9. Explain how you are feeling at this point in the book.  What are you thinking about as the narrator deals with the loss of Jamie?
