Chapter 18 or XVIII

REFLECTION:  Please write you emotional response to what you have read so far.  What are you thinking about after Chapter 18?

  1. “The storm blew itself out with one last angry roar.”  What type of figurative language is this.

  2. Explain what Billy, Papa and the judge heard that sounded like whooping.

  3. The first person to read them was Mr. Kyle.  What do we know about him at this point in the novel? Think about previous chapters.

  4. Explain what brought 25 men out to look for Billy and his hunting party.

  5. Explain what the man who owns the “black and tan hounds,” does for a living.  Why might he be important to the story?

  6. Explain why it’s important that Old Dan and Little Ann tree that 4th coon?  Remember, they got one in chapter 16 and two more in chapter 17. They have three coons right now.  But the blizzard is still happening. (181)

  7. Explain why the “Old snag” was important to the story. (181)

  8. Explain what Mr. Benson saw that scared him.

  9. Explain how the men carried grandpa out during the blizzard. What did they have to build?

  10. Why is there a ring around the big black gum tree? What does this say about Dan and Ann? Why didn’t the dogs just sit down and wait for Billy?

  11. Explain how the men got the ice off the dogs and warmed them.

  12. Mr. Kyle says something very “profound.” Explain what he says to describe why the dogs stayed with the tree. (184)

  13. Explain the theme of this chapter that could apply to the entire book. Mr Kyle will give you the clue to this question.

  14. Explain why when they arrived back at camp, the only tent left was their tent. (185)

  15. Why was Dr. Lathman waiting to move Grandpa? (185)

  16. When Billy hands his father the $300 in prize money, “a strange look come over his face.”  Explain what you think this means.  Why did the author put this part in the story? (185)

  17. Explain how you think Billy felt after his Grandpa said, “We’ll teach these city slickers that they can’t come up here and beat our dogs.”  (186)

  18. Explain what the gift from Old Dan and Little Ann was that Papa handed Mama.

  19. What did mama say when she saw “the gift?”

  20. How did the family celebrate Billy and Papa’s return?

  21. What did mama do that surprised Billy after dinner?
