What is the Preamble to the Constitution?
One of our fifth graders asked this question.
The Preamble is the opening to the United States Constitution. The preamble explains the reasons why the Framers of the Constitution made the American government a republic. By doing this, the founding fathers replaced the Articles of Confederation. The Preamble along with the rest of the Constitution was written over a period of about six weeks. The opening statement explains why the Constitution was written but it is not the law of the land.
The Words of the Preamble of the United States Constitution:
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
