Dr. Seuss meets Scientific Classification
Writing a Seuss-ish poem about an original creature
You are a scientist on an uncharted (undiscovered) island. You are diligently (extremely focused) trying to record all that you see as you explore the unknown forests, waters, mountains and deserts on this huge unknown land. You have encountered a being that is both unique (different) and analogous (similar) to other creatures you have known. You have only had time to draw a very detailed picture of the being in your science journal and then you redrew the creature as a final piece, ready to be framed as a new discovery in a museum.
Your next step:
1. Get together with your team of explorers and share images of the unique creatures you have discovered during your exploration on this island.
Discuss the traits these creatures share that are similar to the living things you have studied.
Discuss if this CREATURE would be
· Vertebrate or invertebrate. If a vertebrate – which of the five types of vertebrates does it belong? Reptile, mammal, amphibian, bird or fish.
· Explain why these creatures falls into these categories.
· Explain where this animal lives. What is its natural habitat based on the traits you see in the animal? The notes from this conversation should be included in your science journal next to your scientific drawing. Do now write on the drawings. Treat them as your museum piece.
2. Using the notes from the discussion about the inherited traits of the newly discovered creature…
Write a descriptive, lyrical poem about your creature.
The poem must -Be written in at least 5 stanzas (poetic paragraphs with ending words rhyming. Each stanza is four lines long.
-
Written in either ABAB or ABCB scheme within the verse.
-
Describe your new creature’s traits and habitat
-
At least two metaphors or similes must be used in the descriptions (2) Expand your Skill
-
try dropping in a tongue twister (alliteration).
