These five marines and one corpsman were raising the American flag on Mt. Suribachi. Three of those men died before the end of the war. The image serves as a reminder to all Americans of the price soldiers have paid and continue to pay to protect the country's freedom. A Marine Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. is modeled after this image.
