Salt Licks settlers

In the book, Salt Licks is a fictional town in rural Texas. The town got its name from the outcropped dark rocks with black streaks that held the salt. The cattle and wild animals came to the cliffs to lick the salt. The narrator mentions that once upon a time, the settler families ran out of salt. They boiled the rocks to season the meat and cornbread.

Papa drove his cattle from Salt Lick, Texas to Abilene, Kansas - More than 600 miles.
