Old Yeller : Chapter 5 

1. Explain one of Arliss's more quirky habits that caused Momma to make Travis teach him to kill snakes. 

2. Look back through Chapter 5.  Review the Bear fight.  Record all the words and phrases that give the reader an exciting "picture" of the events.  What words were used more than once?  Explain how the action of the scene might be improved with other words and phrases by rewriting a portion of the action in your own words. 

3. Little Arliss was "finned."  Explain what it means to be finned.  If you can relate to the experience, tell your own story of being "finned." 

4. Explain why Arliss would not let go of the cub.  Use text evidence and think deeply.

5. Explain who actually saved the family in Chapter 5 and how they did it. 

6. Infer about the ways the events of this chapter may have changed Travis's view of  Old Yeller.

poultice (52) - a soft, moist mass of material, typically of plant material or flour, applied to the body to relieve soreness and inflammation and kept in place with a cloth.

Vernacular: to add voice to a story authors use this type of speech patter that is used in everyday life in certain areas or in cultures.
