How does the author approach this theme? In other words,
how does the author show the reader this theme based on the
events described?
The author tells the story through a child’s point of view. Rose brings food to the Jews living in a concentration camp. As she does so, Rose becomes thinner. This proves she is not taking her share of food but giving all to those in need. Then she disappears. The reader may infer that the soldiers shot her, while she was trying to get the food to the camp.
When Rose discovers where the boy in the truck was taken, she response by spending time bringing the Jews food from her own home. She herself becomes thinner.
