Narrative Writing

Five Most Important Elements of Narrative Writing

Fiction- Not a true story

Nonfiction - Facts, real people

1. Characters:   Protagonist/ good guy

                       Antagonist / bad guy

2. Plot: Events need to happen                        Exposition / Beginning

                                                                   Rising Action

                                                                   Climax / The BIG EVENT

                                                                    Falling Action

                                                                   Resolution / Ending

3. Conflict: internal struggle - Issues within the character's own life or mind

external struggle - Outside forces battle with the character

4. Setting:  Time and Place of the story.  Setting can change a story                               completely.

5. Point of View: Who is telling the story?

First Person- a character is telling the story from within the                             story.  The reader sees the events through one focused                                 point of view.

Third Person - An omniscient voice tells the story. This voice                           is not a character in the story.  It sees and knows all.
