Chapters 15 – 17

  1. List an example of a simile from Chapter 15.

  2. Explain what it means to trash talk.

  3. Explain why Mrs. Beal’s lip started to quiver.

  4. Explain why Maniac tells Mrs. Beal “I love you.”  Think deeply.

  5. What is the significance or importance of the phrase, “Maniac just sat at the front window, being on the inside?” Explain what the author is trying to tell the reader.

  6. Explain what is meant by the following statement. “Maniac loved almost everything about his new life. But everything did not love him back.” (56)

  7. Explain in what way Maniac is “blind.” What can he not “see?”

  8. Explain your thoughts about the author’s statement, “Kids don’t like a kid who is different.” (58) How does this make you feel? Explain when you might have experienced or seen examples of this in your own life.

  9. Think of your own metaphor to describe the environment being too hot.  (Page 59) It was so hot….

  10. When the old man is rude to Maniac, he sees his finger pointing at him, “not a speck of icing on it.” (page 60) What character is he referring to when he thinks of a finger with icing on it? Give text evidence please.  

  11. Explain what you would do if someone was yelling unkind things at your friend as the old man in the rooster pajamas did to Maniac.

  12. Explain why Bow Wow refused to run with Jeffery in the mornings. (62)

  13. Explain why Mrs. Beale is described as “her cheeks wet,” as she scrubbed the chalk words off the house.  (page 63)
