Final Test on Entire Elijah Book.

"Elijah of Buxton" was written by Christopher Paul Curtis(2007). This historical fiction piece tells the story of an 11-year-old boy born free to ex-slaves living in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves near the American Border.

As we read this adventure set in the historic Elgin Settlement of 1849, readers will explore literary techniques to develop critical thinking and the soft skills required for group interaction and negotiation.  Students will be introduced to the novel as the instructor reads aloud, modeling thinking strategies.  Then the book will be turned over to the group.  Each night,  students will be responsible for reading chapters and completing "their job in the Literary Circle."  Notebooks should be overflowing with thoughts and questions as we progress through our literature study.

Chapter 10 Summary

The Preacher offers Elijah up to the carnival owner as "Ahbo," saying he is the last surviving member of the African Chocote tribe, and that he is an orphan. He says Ahbo's father was the king of the Chochotes. He also claims that Elijah learned his craft by killing giant Bama bees that attack people in swarms of ten.

The child who worked with the conjurer before Samuel had been hired, was the original "MaWee," a black child who is feeling frightened that Elijah may take his jobs as the target of Madame Sabarr's grapes, and stage helper to the conjurer. Roberts had felt that the people of Buxton would not like seeing a black child get hit with grapes, and temporarily hired the white child instead. MaWee was bought by "Massa" Charles, the carnival's owner. He tells Elijah about the horrid living...
